Is Caliber Web-Based? |
The short answer is… Yes and No.
All Reef Point Technology products are offered as a web-hosted solution (ASP
version) and a client/server solution (Enterprise version). This provides the
maximum degree of flexibility for customers based on their size, their network
infrastructure and support capabilities, and cost.
What is “Web-based”?
The term “web-based” means different things to different people, although the
generally accepted definition refers to products that you only need a web
browser to use. Using a web browser implies the product is hosted by the
software provider and accessed across the Internet, where customers usually pay
a periodic subscription fee, or a fee based on usage.
But this is not the only case; “web-based” doesn’t necessarily mean “web browser
based”. In fact with .NET technology, standard Windows applications can access
web servers just like web browsers do, but also provide the power and features
of Windows applications that aren’t available with web browsers, like
drag-and-drop, and Microsoft Office integration.
Likewise, “web-based” doesn’t necessarily mean customers are connecting to the
software providers’ hosted web servers and paying periodic fees. Customers could
install a “web-based” application on their own web server and have users connect
via the Intranet (internal only).
So in reality, the question “is Caliber web-based?” should be asked in two
questions:
1. Does Caliber run on Reef Point’s web servers, and
2. Is Caliber web browser based?
This leads us back to our short answer: Yes and no.
Yes: Caliber can run on Reef Point’s web servers, but it can also run on your
own servers. So if you don’t want your data residing on someone else’s servers
then Caliber Enterprise is the way to go. But if you don’t have the network
support to manage your own servers, then Caliber ASP is the right option.
No: Caliber is not web browser based. Caliber Desktop, Caliber Tablet, and
Caliber Mobile, which are software components of Caliber, are all .NET, Windows
client applications that can connect to the server using web services, or in the
case of Caliber Desktop, it can be also configured to connect directly to the
database without the use of a web server. This enables users to enjoy the more
powerful Windows client environment and still connect from anywhere across the
Internet. |
